U.S. Sailor Dies in Mexico Resort Balcony Collapse

MEXICO CITY -- A U.S. navy sailor died and two others were badly injured in the Mexican Pacific Resort of Mazatlan when a balcony on which they were standing collapsed at their hotel, police said on Saturday. The dead man was identified as James Mainard, 30, of San Diego, California. The other two were named as Albert Garcia, 29, and Julio Fofatai, 33. Both were hospitalized in serious condition, authorities said. "The balcony of a room on the third floor fell. It happened around 6:30 P.M. on Friday (00:30 GMT on Saturday). The three sailors fell and one died," said Juan Munoz, spokesman for Mazatlan police. The sailors arrived on Friday aboard the USS Harpers Ferry for a courtesy call to the port of Mazatlan, Reuters reported.
